Happy Holidays from Bliss boutique!

Wow, what a year 2011 has been for Bliss!  I have been on an incredibly blissful journey this year and I know with much certainty that this year would not have happened without all of the amazing customers and friends that I have been blessed with.

The year started out with our third shopping event and fashion show in February.  In March, Bliss ventured into the world of expos with the First Annual Hawaii Fashion and Beauty Expo at the Blaisdell.  It was a hugely successful event for Bliss and was the start of a barrage of smaller shopping events, photo shoots, and fashion shows that went through the summer.

We ended the summer season with the First Annual Super Sale Expo also at the Blaisdell and was a featured vendor in the Midweek style section for the first time!  This was soooo exciting...but not nearly as exciting as meeting make up artist Nathalie Kim during the shoot. I am grateful that Nathalie has become such a huge part of my life!

Probably the highlight of my year was the Hawaii Women's Expo and fashion shows in September.  I was so humbled by the over 50 volunteers that collaborated to make this event such a success!  Amazingly beautiful and talented models, exquisite make up by some of  Hawaii's top MUAs, professional photography by 4 awesome photographers, and an impressive array of help from our Stage Manager, Back stage helpers, booth workers, Music director, and more...I can't wait to do it all over again next year!  Plans will start again soon!

With the Women's expo also came an appearance on the KHON morning show with Trini Kaopuiki and our second feature in Midweek's Style section!

There are so many people that I owe so much to...I know that I can't name them all.  To all of you...customers, volunteers, models, photographers, make up artists, editors, bloggers, friends, and family...thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I am truly grateful for having you in my life and sincerely wish you much joy, love, and laughter this holiday season!

Bliss would not be here, however, if not for...

What's in store for Bliss in 2012?  Lots!  Plans are brewing...stay tuned and find out! :)

Much love,

the Bliss FAB 5

Lori Furoyama, Lana Nakamura, Tina Koike, Angela Choy, and me! :)

After celebrating and reflecting back on 2 years of Bliss, I thought it a fitting time to reveal the secret weapon that I've had the priviledge of using over the past 2 years.

I still remember 2 years ago, on November 1, turning to my bffs at work and telling them guess what?  I've decided to open an online boutique.  I remember the shocked look on their faces as they tried to figure out if I was joking or not.  Since that day, Angela Choy, Lori Furoyama, Lana Nakamura, and Tina Koike have been HUGE supporters of Bliss and more importantly of ME.  They have supported me physically at pretty much every single event I've had and they've supported me emotionally as I dealt with frustrations and set backs.  They have been my back bone.

And they have been my secret weapon. :)  Shortly after the day that I shocked them with my news, they started becoming my best customers.  One thing the five of us share is that we all love to shop (and we are all super cheap shoppers too!!!), but it was interesting that we all actually had fairly different tastes in colors and styles.

After getting stuck while buying for an event, I got a great idea to create the FAB 4.  Bliss' Fashion Advisory Board (FAB) 4 was called upon often to give advice on potential new tops, dresses, handbags, envirosax bags, gift items....you name it.  They have helped me create facebook promos, helped me plan my shopping events, and given me their feedback on my web designs.  This year, I added a new member to our FAB 4 (now called the FAB 5...lol!).  Leah Fukuyama has come aboard to lend her fashion expertise.  Having these 5 fashionistas to bounce ideas off of has helped Bliss to bring in some of the cutest, hottest selling items we've ever had.  Sometimes I don't agree with what they pick, but order it anyway.  I am humbled as I watch their pieces sell out at a live event within an hour.

I owe them so much, and they ask for so little. Bliss didn't make it to its' 2 year birthday on its own...it was because of the support of the FAB 5...and I am truly grateful to have Angela, Lori, Lana, Tina, and Leah next to me on this Bliss journey...and I'm so honored to also call them friends...  :)

Sip and Shop...what a night it was!

On Friday November 4th, beautiful and fabulous fashionistas gathered at the Sip and Shop shopping event in the A Little bit of Everything store in the Imperial Plaza.

Women happily shopped through racks of Bliss clothes, a beautiful table of Gem Parfait handmade jewelry, and adorable gift items from A Little Bit of Everything. With full shopping bags in hand and content smiles on their faces, the women could now relax and enjoy the spread of great food!

Friend and caterer Subir Kole (pictured at right) created a huge array of amazing dishes including tofu tandoori, mushroom tandoori, shrimp tandoori, chicken tandoori, home made naan, and a delicious salad.  Everyone raved about his masterpieces all night!

And in case that didn't fill our guests up, there were kalua pig rolls from Valerie of A Little bit of Everything, brownies and cookies from Allison of Gem Parfait, and mini red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting from Annie Yeung of Panya Bakery.
A beautiful and tasy array of crackers, chips, dips, and sauces were also on hand from Leah Fukuyama of Pampered Chef.  Happy women washed all the food down with some yummy margaritas.
It was a fantastic night of shopping, eating, drinking, and most of all FUN.  I think everyone who came enjoyed themselves judging by the big smiles on everyone's faces, even the men in attendance looked like they had a great time!

For me, I felt so thankful to see great friends and loyal customers showing their constant support of Bliss.  Thank you to Subir Kole, friend and new caterer, for slaving in the kitchen all day long to cook for us.  You never cease to impress us all!  Thank you Angela Choy for always being there.  Whatever I need, you are always there...thank you for picking up the food on Friday!!

It was such an honor to meet Allison Fujita, the owner of Gem Parfait.  She is stunningly beautiful on the outside, but is even more beautiful on the inside.  Such a sweet soul and so amazingly talented too!  Finally, it is always a pleasure putting on an event with Valerie Kubota of A Little bit of Everything.  She inspires me with her unending energy, enthusiasm, and sincerity in every single thing that she does.

Until the next event!  :)

APDM 437: Small Business Start-up taught by Budi Staven

I had such a great time giving a presentation to UHM's APDM 437 class: Small Business Start-Up taught by Budi Staven last week Tuesday, October 11.  It was so inspiring speaking to and fielding questions from such intelligent and ambitious students and it was great to see the enthusiasm in their eyes and hear the excitement in their voices and laughter. What was supposed to be 30 minutes turned into over an hour but it flew by so quickly!

Special thank you to Bliss model and customer Heide Torno for asking me to speak to her class, Budi Staven for allowing me into his class, and the students of APDM 437 for inspiring me.  Heide's very sweet email follows.

Hi Wendy!

Thank you so much again for taking the time out of your schedule to speak to my class! Your presentation was great and everyone loved you! My teacher even considered having you speak again in future semesters. My class and I gained more knowledge and insight from you presentation. It was truly inspiring and informational. One thing I especially loved was your strategy of collaboration. It is amazing how your generosity and willingness to help others (even though it may not be related to fashion) can consequently result in the benefit of your business. I also found it very interesting how you see it as a hobby which I think contributes to your successfulness for your business.

Thank you so much again! Words cannot describe how appreciative my class and I were to have you!

Best wishes,
Heide

If you can dream it, you can do it...

A quote from one of my favorite people, Walt Disney, guides my thoughts as I prepare a presentation to an APDM (Apparel, Production, Design & Merchandising) Entrepreneur class at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  "If you can dream it, you can do it..."

I was so honored when a model in one of my fashion shows, Heide Torno, asked me to speak at her class.  I have always loved teaching...almost any subject, almost any age group.  I enjoy being able to share ideas and hopefully inspire everyone in my class so they can leave the class thinking about something new.

But, what do I talk about?  What information do I have that could help these students in their quest to start their own businesses?  I figured they are learning marketing, budgeting, and pricing strategies from their lecturer, so what kind of real world knowledge can I leave them with.  Then, it hit me.  Being an entrepreneur is the most scary roller coaster ride I have ever been on!  It's enough to scare even the smartest and most ambitious women away.  But, for the ones that decide to take it on, it can also be the most exhilirating experience of their life!

"Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears..."  Les Brown.  Think about what you would do if you were guaranteed you would not fail?  Many of us, myself included, let fear guide us away from our goals and dreams.  I love this quote from Robert Schuller, "I'd rather attempt something great and fail, than to attempt nothing at all and succeed."

So, don't be afraid!  Go after your dreams and make them a reality!  Find your passion(s) in life and just do it...today! :)  and if you find time, I would LOVE to hear about it! :)

A perfect weekend...

Everything was perfect.

That pretty much sums up our exciting Fall fashion show weekend.  On the weekend of September 9, 10, and 11, Bliss presented three hugely spectacular fashion shows.  Here is a look inside our weekend!  Early Friday morning, Bliss was featured on a short 21/2 minute segment on the KHON morning news.  I was interviewed live by Trini Kaopuiki as Tia Morales and Taiana Tully looked fabulous on the runway in Bliss, Bead Girl Heaven, and Wishing Bridge jewelry.  Thank you Tia and Taiana!  Such beauties! :)

Backstage stylists Tina Koike & Leah Fukuyama as well as Shannon Nii & Erika LaPuente, Fashion Booth Assistants arrived and were quickly briefed on the model's line up, the model board, the model's clothing rack, and what to do backstage by super organized, lifesaver of the weekend Stage Manager Angela Choy.

Soon after, make up artists and photographers started arriving.  Photographers Keoki Kim and Brice Kurihara of Local Hawaii Magazine arrived and set up a photo studio in our make up room to take headshots of all of the models. Photographer Noel Curammeng also arrived and immediately started documenting our night.  Thank you to Noel for the awesome pictures in this blog and on our website!

Finally, the model call time had approached and Angela busily directed all of our beautiful models to the make up room where they were assigned to a make up artist, followed by a hair stylist. Super sweet model Tia Morales, who is also a make up artist and hair stylist, even stepped in to do hair on a few models.  The make up room and our booth started to buzz with excitement as the models shuffled from make up artist to hair stylist to wardrobe to photographer!  It was an exciting flurry of activity as we anxiously awaited the fashion show.

Meanwhile, super awesome Leah Fukuyama and Tina Koike quickly set up our backstage by bringing over our rack of clothes, our Bliss banner to take on stage, and our model board.

As we approached the 8:00 hour, Angela gathered all of the models in the make up room and gave her last minute directives then escorted them to the backstage area where they patiently endured a 20 minute wait. Finally!  It was show time and the girls sure knew how to turn it on!

They were amazing to watch as they left me from the top of the stage.  I watched from the back of the curtains in awe as every single one of them worked the runway like a true pro.  Until the amazing finale choreographed by Nathalie Kim, these girls kept the audience at the edge of their seats.  Then, after 20 seemingly brief minutes, our "Opening Night" fashion show was done.  Everyone (models, make up artists, assistants, stage manager, and myself) was smiling from ear to ear because we all knew that we had pulled off a flawless show.

Then, we all went home, came back the next day and did it all over again...three perfect shows.  Truly amazing work by all involved and I have so so so much gratitude for everyone.  I will post a list of ALL of the people who helped make this happen soon.  What made me most proud was that this was truly a team effort in action.  Everyone worked together and worked super hard to make this a success and in the end, everyone felt (I hope) a sense of pride that they had made this happen!

I've already asked for a spot next year, so if you missed this year's show, make it a point to not miss next year's!! ;)

Bliss Fall Fashion Show Backstage Experience by: Jessica Cheng

My first time being backstage at a fashion show really sparked me. Being able to watch all the models get their makeup and wardrobe on was so much fun. I was even able to talk to some of them and meet them for the first time. My main focus of that evening was to learn more about photography. I really had absolutely no idea how small little things could impact the picture by a lot. I want to thank the photographers Keoki Kim and Eric Jordan for teaching me some basic camera skills and letting me try shots myself with tips and tricks on how to make the picture better. My first project that day was shooting models on the runway. Hardest thing ever. Sometimes they would walk out so fast, I didn't have time to shoot it, or the lighting would be bad and I would have missed the shot. I didn't think taking the shots would be that hard and I learned so much from it. Lighting also makes a huge difference in a photo. Overall, this learning experience was a bit tough, but something I got to try and maybe get better from there on.

Jessica Cheng is a very sweet, articulate, and pretty high school student whom we had the pleasure of hanging out with on Saturday September 10.  As a part of her high school project, Jessica joined the models, make up artists, hair stylists, stage manager, two professional fashion photographers, and myself as we prepared for Saturday's fashion show.  I asked Jessica to blog about her experience.  Thank you Jessica for hanging out with us!  Everyone enjoyed having you there! :)

Fittings, fittings, and more fittings! :)

Our fittings continue!  Pictured here are beautiful models Nicole Chiemi and Jenna Kamei.  They are not only gorgeous, but so truly nice, as are all of the other models in the show.

I've been so amazed by the quality level of the models that will be walking in these fashion shows.  They are stunning, poised, and ultra professional.  I'm so blessed to be able to work with them and am really excited to see this fashion show come to fruition next week.  Last orders have been placed and the 30+ pieces in the show are really amazing.  I think there is something in the collection for everyone and the pieces are very comfortable and easy to style with other pieces.  I think you will all love it!

Bliss' Private label Fall collection to be featured in Midweek!

(Left to right) Wendy Chang, Kimberly Duong, Kelsey Campbell,
Tia Morales, Lehua Nahina, Nathalie Kim, and YuShing Ting.
Thanks to Yu Shing Ting from Midweek, Bliss will be featured in the Style section of September 7th's issue of Midweek.  On Wednesday August 24, drop dead gorgeous models Kelsey Campbell, Tia Morales, and Lehua Nahina arrived at Salon Cookie Couture starting at 8:30 in the morning to get their hair styled by Kimberly Duong and their make up applied by Nathalie Kim.  Keoki Kim, photographer for Local Hawaii magazine, arrived to shoot some behind the scenes shots at the studio before they all headed to the beautiful Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (JCCH).  Denise Park, JCCH's PR director, welcomed everyone and within minutes we were off shooting amidst the scenic JCCH backdrop.  Kelsey, Tia, and Lehua are PROS!  Watching them work was really fun!  We were all kept busy the entire time, touching up make up, accessorizing, fixing and changing hair styles, getting their next change of outfit ready, and meeting with Yu Shing.  Yu Shing styled all the shots while her photographer captured the images and I can tell these shots are going to be fantastic!!!  Everyone was moving quickly and efficiently and in a little over an hour, 9 different outfits on 3 models, complete with shoes, feather accessories, and bags had been shot!  Finally, we could all breath a sigh of relief and enjoy our starbucks drink from my starbucks run.  It was a humbling experience working with such professionals.  Be on the lookout during the week of September 7th for our piece.  I can't wait to see the images, it should be nothing short of amazing... :)

On the move towards our fashion show!

We are now moving full speed ahead to our Fall fashion show in September.  Be on the look out for Bliss!  Next week, we will shoot a Midweek style section feature to come out in September 7th's issue.  Bliss will also be featured on KHON on the early morning of Friday September 9.

This week, I'll be busy with ordering lots and lots of super cute and stylish pieces for the show!  I'm spending my days looking through a dizzying array of tops and dresses.  Have any suggestions for me?  A color, style, fabric?  Leave me a comment below, I'd love to hear it!  Already on the runway are really cute denim shorts and jeans, a dozen new Tosca handbags, and shoes!  yes, shoes!  I'll be bringing in a couple of styles especially for the fashion show and to sell at the expo!!!

Lastly, thank you to my friend who just discovered a new talent!  Mike Furoyama put on his DJ hat and made me an awesome mix of music for the fashion show.  I owe you, Mike!  Thank you!

Super Sale Event this weekend!

I'm slowly recovering from a pretty tiring but really fun weekend at Hawaii's Super Sale Event held at the Neal Blaisdell Center's Exhibition hall.  I was so touched to see Bliss customers in the booth at 5pm, right at opening on Friday evening, waiting to shop for great deals and get the first pick of new sizes and styles.  As usual, we quickly ran out of size smalls in many of our new styles.  Some styles were gone within the first hour of the expo.

I also had a wonderful time meeting lots of new Bliss customers as well as some of the wonderful vendors located near our booth!  We had an excellent booth, booth #3, which was situated to the immediate right of the main entrance.  Lots of visibility and great foot traffic of the crowds that attended.  Since this was a first time event, there were some kinks in the show and turn out was rather low, but we managed OK, made lots of new friends, and I was pleased with our participation in the event overall.

I wanted to thank 6 very special people who was instrumental in the success of our booth this weekend.  Shannon Nii, Leah Fukuyama, Angela Choy, Sandi Abdellahad, Chad Kawashima, and Bernice Balete volunteered their very valuable weekend time to join me in the Bliss booth.  Shannon saw the most customers as Friday was by far the busiest!  She worked sooo hard helping so many customers at once.  She managed to try on some cute pieces too during the few breaks we found.  After trying on a super cute black top, a cute girl from two booths down literally ran over to our booth and said she wanted that top.  Unfortunately, it was the last one and although I knew Shannon really wanted it, she selflessly gave up the last remaining top so that our customer could try it on.  Of course, our customer loved it and purchased it, and Shannon was left looking for another top.  Thank you Shannon for putting our customer before yourself and making her SOOO happy!  She wore a dress she bought that night for her shift at the expo on Sunday!

On Saturday, Leah Fukuyama and Angela Choy kept me and our customers entertained with their super funny stories and always friendly personalities.  Leah stayed way past her shift time since she was waiting for her super shopper mom to finish shopping the expo!!!  Leah, who started out as a Bliss customer has turned into such a good friend and super supporter of Bliss.  Thank you Leah for always volunteering to help out and for being soo much fun to hang out with.  My bff from my job at UH, Angela, is so awesome and so crazy.  Angela shows up to volunteer for me AND brings me a starbucks and noodles for lunch!  OMG...both were gone within minutes!  Thanks Angela, you are the sweetest sweetest friend, I'm so lucky to know you!  Sandi came to her shift on Sat evening and was given a free exhibitor's pass to shop the expo, but this serious Bliss shopper was at my booth on Friday at 5pm to make sure she scored one of the 50% off tanks from the facebook promotion!  Thanks Sandi for getting a babysitter just so you could hang out with me on Saturday night!

Sunday was by far the slowest expo day.  My sweet friend, Chad came to support me by volunteering in my booth for a couple of hours.  He was mainly there to attract the women into the booth, (lol) but once they were in, the customers had to inform him what the Bliss sale and promotion was.  Oh well, Chad, just stand there and look good, OK? All kidding aside, Chad was very helpful and was officially my first male volunteer.  Bernice was the last volunteer of the expo!  She was so awesome at running the booth, that I was able to walk around the expo for the first time!  Thanks to Bernice, I was able to meet other vendors and network a bit shortly before closing.  She also looked so stunning in the Bliss tops that she tried on!

The end of the Super Sale event has come.  Next stop:  the Hawaii Woman's Expo!

the Bliss Fall Fashion Show Team

It was a serendipitous event when I met Nathalie Kim of Salon Cookie Couture on the set of the Midweek photo shoot! Not only is Nathalie a phenomenal make up artist and hair stylist, but she is sweet, warm, and super fun! I am so fortunate that she has agreed to collaborate with me on the Bliss Fall fashion shows in September.

Nathalie has helped me to create an amazing team of volunteers!  After countless hours of chatting and emailing, we have recruited nearly 30 of Hawaii's most beautiful models, 6 super talented make up artists, 2 awesome hair stylists, and 2 amazing photographers for this event.
Fashion assistants Leah Fukuyama, Denise Park, Lori Furoyama, Elsie Watanabe, and Tina Koike have been recruited to help organize the backstage chaos, and Stage Manager Angela Choy will oversee the organized craziness backstage. lol!

We are also looking for fashionable and fun people to help us in the Bliss booth, so let us know if you're available and interested! In addition to having lots of fun, our volunteers always leave blissfully happy with new pieces for their closet...leave a comment on this blog or email me at customerservice@shopblissonline.com for more information on helping in the booth.

Note:  If you ever need a ridiculously talented make up artist, hair stylist, check out Salon Cookie Couture here.

Midweek style section photo shoot

On June 29, Bliss participated in an exciting photo shoot for Midweek's style section.  Bliss along with two other vendors was selected to promote Hawaii's Super Sale expo happening on August 12, 13, and 14th at the Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition hall.

The morning was spent at Salon Cookie Couture where Nathalie Kim worked her make up magic with our already beautiful models.  We left Nathalie's and met Nathalie Walker and Yu Shing Ting, along with Nancy and Roland of the Supersale expo at the Neal Blaisdell Center exhibition hall for the shoot. Models Misha Maletta and Kristen Nemoto had fun selecting from a trunk load of shoes provided by Nicky Shoes. They looked absolutely beautiful in their Bliss pieces, accompanied with stunning feather accessories by Bead Girl Heaven.  The shoot was a success and the style spread that hit on July 12 looked fantastic!  Special thanks to Chad Kawashima for taking photos for Bliss and Monique Oda and Diana Costa, friends of Bliss, who came down to model for the other vendors (on super short notice!!).

Where is your Bliss?

In June, Bliss hosted a facebook challenge called "Where is your Bliss?"  I asked Bliss customers to post fantastic photos of themselves looking stunning in their Bliss outfits.  I was overwhelmed by the response and had so much fun seeing Bliss pieces in so many stages of your lives.  Here is just a sampling of the many entries.  Shannon Nii gets engaged, Leah Fukuyama poses with her boyfriend, Mika Campos in her engagement photos (Congrats Mika...she recently got married!!!), and Angelina Yamaguchi with her beautiful young family.  It was so rewarding to see these and other beautiful Bliss girls enjoying Bliss in such significant parts of their lives.  Thank you for including Bliss in your lives!  You are all very special to Bliss and to me! :)

the Bliss blog is back!

It's been a looong time since we've last had the bliss blog up, but I've decided to bring it back at least for a little while since so many exciting things are happening at bliss.  Bliss is so excited to be trying new ventures, meeting new contacts, and serving new customers.

Right now, however, we are focused on a super fun and exciting series of fashion shows to be held at the Hawaii Woman's Expo at the Neal Blaisdell Center exhibition hall during fashion week.  Bliss will be featuring 30 brand new styles on a 36' runway on September 9, 10, and 11.

Follow our blog to see all the exciting behind the scenes prep work to get to the fashion show.  We'll be looking for lots of volunteers (volunteers get bliss gift cards!) for the Woman's expo too, so if you're interested, stay tuned.
